City to sign World Design Capital agreement
THE EXECUTIVE Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille and International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid,) President Soon-in Lee, will sign the World Design Capital 2014 Host City Agreement in Cape Town on Friday 29 June 2012.
Icsid encourages World Design Capital cities to shape the opportunity and interpret the designation to be relevant within their own contexts. As the World Design Capital designation has moved from Torino to Seoul to Helsinki, it has been defined and enriched by the particular perspectives of each host city.
The city expressed its satisfaction with the final terms of the host city agreement. De Lille says Cape Town will bring its own unique vision to the project, and the vision is to use the World Design Capital 2014 opportunity to transform Cape Town into one of the most inclusive, sustainable and productive cities on the African continent.
Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 programme will be managed, developed and implemented by an independent, non-profit company, currently in the process of name registration. To ensure continuity and alignment with the bid vision, the World Design Capital 2014 implementation company is being incubated by the Cape Town Partnership, who also coordinated Cape Town’s successful bid on behalf of the city. The Cape Town Partnership has been mandated by the city to set up the World Design Capital 2014 implementation company. The Cape Town Partnership will also provide essential strategic and project support, and the city will provide seed funding for the implementing company.
