City of Cape Town to host German Minister of Science and Technology
THE CITY of Cape Town will host the German National Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Annete Schavan, to the Harare Library in Khayelitsha, today. The minister’s visit forms part of the South African/German Year of Science and Technology programme, which seeks to celebrate and promote science and technology advancements between Germany and South Africa.
The visit also demonstrates the close ties and partnership that the City of Cape Town enjoys with the Federal State of Germany through the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) programme. The VPUU project is the flagship programme in the urban development context of the bilateral cooperation between the German and South African governments. The City of Cape Town was the selected municipality to test this model. T
o date there has been a 15,5 million Euro financial contribution from the German government. Over 20 building projects; 150 community projects and over 8 000 counseling sessions with victims of gender based violence have been completed since project inception, all with the objective of increasing social cohesion. The Harare library is the benchmark for using libraries as hubs for learning and lifelong learning in low income areas. Harare has been the first library of its kind with a second library currently under design for Kuyasa, a neighboring community in Khayelitsha.
